I was reading through some of the email digests I receive each morning and stopped to read the BtoB “Rollout” digest. Today’s digest featured Yahoo! as one of the “new campaigns” videos featured in the newsletter.

Personally, I am still not sold on all the new versions of its homepage Yahoo! has been going through…even this new one, with its fancy-schmancy social media integrations. Perhaps it’s still that I’m bothered by the fact that Yahoo! is more concerned with cosmetic improvements instead of returning quality search results.

And that’s not to say that a makeover can’t help you. Case in point, Bing - with their very expensive makeover-slash-rebrand, they’re telling Yahoo! to eat their dust.

By the way, Yahoo!, you’re weren’t really all that subtle in the video when you were making an example of a “boring” homepage that just wants to lead you away from that page. At least that “anonymous company you mentioned” got the search part down pat.

Friday Diversion: Fun with Google Auto-Complete

Yes, I know…the “Thursday Diversion” for this week is a day late. I was at a conference in San Diego for the beginning part of this week and simply did not have time since I was catching up. So sue me. I think this is a pretty good one though, so I didn’t want to wait a whole extra week just to post it.

Google’s auto-complete feature can produce some pretty hilarious results, as shown by mkandlez’s diagram above. He used the Web Seer tool to create a pretty nifty visual representation of what people are searching for when it comes to boyfriend/girlfriend advice. Hilarious!

I tried one, using “why do dogs…” vs. “why do cats…” in the search boxes. The most common “complete” phrase was: “lick people”.

Perhaps I’ll just have to Google both and find out.

Google Announces DoubleClick for Publishers

Google announced on Monday, February 22nd that they have developed new ad-serving technology for online publishers. This new technology will be available in two different versions: DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP - replacing “DART for Publishers”), aimed at larger websites, and DFP Small Business, a lighter, free version for smaller websites.

It doesn’t seem as though new information for the products is posted on the DoubleClick main site; however, the BtoB article states that Google will be upgrading current DART for Publishers customers to DoubleClick for Publishers over the next year. In addition, Google Ad Manager customers will be migrated to DFP Small Business in the coming weeks.

Also, Google has their third option, AdSense, aimed at publishers who do not want to take an active role in ad management on their websites.
