A colleague, former co-worker, and friend, Doron Orenstein of Magnetic Webworks, created a blog post about a month ago that had me thinking today about networking. Many people I know use their networks only when they need something - either an issue needs to be resolved, they need a vendor for a project or they need a job. Granted, I will admit that I was once one of these “one-way networkers.” However, I’ve learned over the years that you need to give if you want to take. Yin and Yang. Ebony and Ivory. It’s just how the world works (or should work)
Even if you’ve been living in a cave, you know full-well how tough the economy has been on jobs over the past couple of years. However, one group that doesn’t seem to be suffering from this shortage of jobs is the workforce of web developers…
In short, Doron created a canned auto-response that is sent to various email inquiries from recruiters. Instead of having to politely tell them all that he’s not interested in pursuing anything, they receive a somewhat customized response letting the recruiter know that he has other contacts who are in the market.
